Dale Bascom Obituary

Dale Brent Bascom, beloved father, grandfather and husband passed away peacefully on the morning of January 8th, 2024.

Dale was born in Roosevelt, Utah on January 13th,1949 to Elvin Ira and Venice Manwaring Bascom, the 4th of 5 children. He enjoyed his childhood and adolescent years in Roosevelt, playing sports with his brothers and friends. He graduated from Union HIgh School in Roosevelt where he lettered in four sports (basketball, football, baseball and track), participated in the drama club and served as the student body Vice President his senior year.

Dale went on to attend Dixie State college in St. George, UT on a basketball scholarship where he enjoyed much success. Upon completing his freshman year at Dixie State, and with the inspired encouragement from his brother Glen, he decided to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He faithfully served in the Central American Mission, which included the countries of Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the San Blas Islands. HIs missionary experiences helped him develop a deep love for His Savior Jesus Christ and taught him the importance of service to others.

He returned to Dixie State after his mission to resume his college education and also continued to play basketball. After completing his second year of college, Dale began his career working at the Freeport Center in Ogden, UT with his older brother Gordon. An opportunity to progress and advance in his career came with Milne Truck Lines and he moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1972. He enjoyed his 45 year career in the trucking business working alongside colleagues and making a lasting impact. He finished his career with Swift Transportation and retired in 2018 after 26 years.

He met and married Cherie Human (later divorced) and together they built their family of one daughter and two sons. Dale loved being a father and passed on his love for sports by coaching his sons’ baseball and basketball teams and serving as an AIA basketball and football official for many years. He enjoyed serving in his church and dedicated a lot of time to completing home-improvement jobs. He always had an ongoing project and taught his children the value of hard work. Dale’s hobbies included beekeeping, photography, painting, collecting model classic cars, spending time with family and watching his hometown Cardinals, Suns and Diamondbacks.

Dale remarried Lee Waters in 2010. They spent 14 wonderful years together. Dale adored Lee and Lee in turn loved and cared for Dale. She cared for him for many years as he suffered from the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. He was always very complimentary of how well she cared for and loved him, despite the challenging circumstances. They enjoyed doing many activities together including watching sports, working on household projects and spending time with family.

Dale is survived by his wife Leatrice Bae Bascom; children Cami King, Brent (Kelly) Bascom; Nathan (Rachele) Bascom; step-daughters Nicole (Russ) Eversole and Jamie (Jay) Lopez. 16 grandchildren; sister Wilda (Norman) Tanner; brothers Glen (Louise) Bascom and Kent (Nancy) Bascom.
