Lionel Benson, a man of unwavering faith, boundless love, and selfless service, returned home to his Heavenly Father due to natural causes on March 23, 2025, at the age of 85. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion to his family and faith.

Lionel Vance Benson was born July 8, 1939 in Logan, Utah, to Vance Hugh Benson and Neta Joannah Hansen Benson as the youngest of 8 children- Vaughan, Avard, Winston, Neta Eloise, Irma, Ariel, Gretta, and Lionel. A sports aficionado, Lionel claimed the nickname “Casey” at a young age for his countless hours attached to a baseball glove and bat. Lionel loved playing sports, including track, baseball, and basketball, but grew to love watching them more as he had his own children and grandchildren. 

Graduating from North Cache High as the student body president, Lionel grew up with a deep love for learning and hard work. He pursued his passion for engineering at Utah State University, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. His sharp mind and dedication to his work were evident throughout his career, but his true joy in life was not found in professional accomplishments—it was in his family and love for his Savior Jesus Christ.

Lionel’s greatest treasure was his beloved wife, Donna, with whom he built a life full of love and faith. Together, they raised five wonderful children Tami (Dan) Wardrop, Vicki (Mark) Stoker, Dave (Julie) Benson, Jennifer (Kyle) Carter, and Laurie (Rob) Friend, and their love multiplied through 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Lionel emulated the value of hard work by initiating and carrying out countless projects, including remodeling cabinets and kitchens, constructing treehouses for the kids, or even making wooden pens or swords. He felt that the best memories were spent more than just completing a project but building stronger relationships with his children and grandchildren. Nothing brought him more happiness than spending time with his family, sharing stories, wisdom, and his signature knee-slapping humor.

A man of deep faith, Lionel found joy in serving others, whether through his church callings, community, or simple acts of kindness. He and Donna served at every opportunity, taking them on adventures as far as Nigeria, Africa with the WHO Measles Campaign and as close to home as the Tempe Arizona mission (that happened to initiate the move closer to many of the grandkids). His warmth and generosity touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we celebrate the incredible life Lionel lived—a life of love, faith, and service. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire us until we meet again.
