Merle Anne (Hitchcock) Johnston, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024, in Mesa, Arizona surrounded by her family. Born on August 8, 1961, in Aurora, Colorado, Merle was a shining light in the lives of all who knew her.

Merle is survived by her devoted husband, David Westfield Johnston Ill, and their cherished children: Francheska Nash, Jayme Richins, David Westfield Johnston IV, Darrin Johnston, Tracy Johnston, Lana Johnston, Ruby Koa, Josh Johnston and her brother Mark Hitchcock. Her loving legacy extends to her 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with the joyful anticipation of another great-grandchild on the way.

For 28 and a half years nearly three decades, Merle dedicated her career to Gilbert Public Schools as a special needs bus monitor, where her kindness and compassion touched the lives of countless students and families. Her coworkers fondly remember her love of playing cards during breaks, her humor, and her unwavering dedication.

Merle's passions were as vibrant as her spirit. She adored her family above all else, but her heart also belonged to her German Shepherds, horses, and the beauty of sunflowers. Those who knew her will remember her for her warmth, compassion, and remarkable sense of humor.

A Celebration of Life honoring Merle will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
